The materials in this bound volume were generated due to a manuscript called the "Harris manuscript." The Harris manuscript was written down by the sisters Amelia Harris (1815-1891) and Jane Harris (1823-1897). William Macmath (1844-1922) was a scholar and collector of Scottish ballad text. He transcribed numerous Scottish ballad manuscripts and sent the copies to Harvard professor, Francis James Child. Child used these texts in his research for his English and Scottish Popular Ballads (1882-1898). After Child's death in 1898, Harvard professor George Lyman Kittredge continued the research. George Ritchie Kinloch, was a Scottish antiquary and authority on ballad lore, best known as editor of Ancient Scottish Ballads .
